Footloose Adventure Travel has a long association with India, based on many years experience of running trips there. We are able to organise trips throughout the country, particularly to the Himalaya, whether it's an individual trip around the classic sights, treks to remote and beautiful areas or a full scale expedition.

The Himalaya stretch for hundreds of miles along the northern boundary. Even here the variety is staggering, from the arid moonscapes of Ladakh in the far north west to the luxuriant valleys of Sikkim in the east. Ladakh (which is loosely taken to include Zanskar, Lahaul and Spiti) is an extension of the Karakoram in Pakistan.

Beyond the main Himalayan ridge and so out of reach of the monsoon, this is a desert mountain area. The arid landscape is broken by bright green cultivated valleys, where the villages and monasteries uses the snow-melt to irrigate their crops. The trekking routes here tend to be long and arduous because of the lack of settlements, but traversing stupendous gorges and passes.

The Garhwal, the central area, which includes Nanda Devi, catches the monsoon and so is much greener and more populated. It is reminiscent of Nepal, with snow capped peaks, forested valleys and hospitable villages. There are many Hindu holy places here and the area is threaded by ancient pilgrim paths.

In the foothills there are many old hill stations, which make delightful stopping points for the journey into the mountains. Sikkim is in the far east. The monsoon gives a great richness of flora and the Buddhist culture emphasises the nearness of its neighbour, Bhutan. Trekking here is more limited, but includes the southern approaches to Kanchenjunga.

North India is the huge area of plains centred around the cities of Delhi, Agra and Varanasi. These great Moghul cities have some of the greatest cultural and historic sites in the world - the Red fort, Taj Mahal, Fatepur Sikra, the Ghats. Rajasthan is the desert area to the west. Here are the fabled cities of Udaipur, Jaipur and Jodphur and the great palaces and castles.

South India is more relaxed and distant from the heat and dust of the north. The main city is Madras and there are the hill stations such as Ooty, good walking in the hills and fascinating game parks. At the southern tip are some of the finest beaches and the quiet backwaters of Kerala.
