DANAKIL TOUR

This trip takes you to one of the most unhospitable places on earth, so do not underestimate the rigours of this journey. The rewards are great - visiting a remarkable volcanic landscape and seeing the centuries old salt trading.


Day 1 Arrive on morning flight.Afternoon transfer Addis Ababa - Awash
Day 2 Awash National Park (second night here but can be avoided for economy)
Day 3 Drive to Loggia to collect Afar guide o/n basic Hotel
Day 4 Drive to Afrera o/n Basic hotel. Visit Salt lake Afrera
Day 5 Drive to Dodom Afar Village. o/n Under the stars or in Afar community Hut
Day 6 Climb Erta Ale, camp there
Day 7 Walk down early morning from the crater. Rendezvous with cars and return back to Dodom village. Chance to visit water hole. Also opportunity to interact with local Afars.
Day 8 Drive to Ahmedela along unmarked sandy track road with local guide. We make an early start stopping at an oasis for a late breakfast. Visit local river bed in early evening to see camel activity. o/n Camping.
Day 9 Early morning drive to Dallul Depression. Explore amazing rock formations, crystal and mineral deposits. Lunch in the shade of a salt rock outcrop to relax during hottest part of the day. Camping overnight at campsite.
Day 10 Full day to visit the Dallol area - salt mining & camel caravans. After an early start to walk with camels arriving from Berahile for salt cutting at the salt lake.
Day 11 Follow camel caravan to salt mining and observe salt cutting, shaping and then loading of camels. Return to cars and drive up to Berahile to camp outside the town. Evening walk to see camel herders arriving and departing from Berahile. A
welcome drink at the Officers club. Camping overnight.
Day 12 Drive to Mekele,
Day 13 Fly to Addis Ababa on this morning.free time until evening flight home
Optional extra days can be added diverting to Wukro and visiting Gheralta Churches.

Text in here.Although near the Equator, the climate of Ethiopia is is quite cool because of the altitude. The rains are June to August.


Visas are required for Ethiopia. All normal tropical health precautions apply and there is a risk of malaria in the south.
