DANAKIL TOUR

This trip takes you to one of the most unhospitable places on earth, so do not underestimate the rigours of this journey. The rewards are great - visiting a remarkable volcanic landscape and seeing the centuries old salt trading.

Day 1 Depart London


Day 2 Arrive Addis Ababa


Day 3 Drive to Awash o/n Genet Hotel


Day 4 Drive to Loggia(Asaita) to collect Afar guide o/n basic Hotel


Day 5 Drive to Afrera o/n Basic hotel. Visit Salt lake


Day 6 Drive to Dodom Afar Village and make camp nearby.


Day 7 Walk up to a shady area towards volcano, resting up in heat of the day. Then walk in cool of the afternoon up to the Ataele. About 2 hours in total. Explore the whole crater area by daylight, have supper and visit by night for more dramatic view of the erupting lava. Then walk down for just over one hour with head torches back to a healthier camp site. Fumes can be a bit much if one camps by the rim.


Day 8 Rendezvous with cars and return to Dodom village. Chance to visit water hole for cold shower/wash. Meet local Afar community.


Day 9 Drive to Ahmedela along unmarked sandy road with local guide. Lunch on the way at palm oasis. Camp outside the town .


Day 10 Early morning drive to Dallul Depresion. Explore amazing rock formations, crystal and mineral deposits. Lunch in the shade of a salt rock outcrop to relax during hottest part of the day. Camping overnight.


Day 11 Early start to walk with camels arriving from Berahile for salt cutting. Follow camel caravan to salt mining and observe salt cutting, shaping and then loading of camels. Return to cars and drive up to Berahile to camp outside the town. Evening walk to see camel herders arriving and departing from Berahile. A welcome cold drink at the Officers club. Camping overnight.


Day 12 Return to Mekele overnight at Ambra Castel Hotel


Day 13 Fly to Addis

Guide cost is about £2770 per person fully inclusive with two vehicles.

Text in here.Although near the Equator, the climate of Ethiopia is is quite cool because of the altitude. The rains are June to August.


Visas are required for Ethiopia. All normal tropical health precautions apply and there is a risk of malaria in the south.
