Namibia walking and trekking - there are some excellent day walks on good trails and several challenging longer treks. These can be built into your itinerary for a longer trip or you can join a group departure on the longer ones. Have a look at the Namibia Walking pages. Etosha National Park is one of the greatest African game reserves. The centre of the park is a huge salt pan the size of Wales. After some rainy seasons this holds water, but usually it is dry. In the surrounding bush are numerous waterholes where large herds of animals can be seen. The park is well organised, with three centres. There are floodlit waterholes at each, where night game viewing can be enjoyed with some comfort. There is a network of tracks and so in a few days most of the park can be visited. Sossusvlei has huge and spectacular sand dunes, rising to a thousand feet, and are formed of contrasting apricot sand. It's usual to visit the area at dawn, when the low sun highlights the dramatic slopes. The ridges can be climbed, giving remarkable views of this surreal landscape. The Skeleton Coast, once feared but now slightly tamed, is the most bleak place imaginable, with the cold South Atlantic on one side and endless desert on the other. A few hours drive along the coast is Cape Cross, a breeding colony of tens of thousands of seals. They can be approached very closely and there is the remarkable sight of the huge waves thick with fishing seals. Swakopmund is the second city of Namibia and is on the coast. The cold water drifting up from the Antarctic makes swimming unattractive, but it's an interesting place. There are activities here such as sand surfing and dune buggies, and just south is Walvis Bay with the huge Sandwich harbour nature Reserve. Fish River Canyon in the extreme south is a canyon second only to the Grand Canyon in USA. There are viewpoints along the rim with strenuous walks into the canyon. At the foot of the canyon, where it emerges from the mountains there is the small thermal resort of Ai Ais, where there is a hot swimming pool, bar and restaurant. Naukluft Mountains rise from the
Namib desert and and are very wild. There are a number of day walks and
you can often see mountain zebra. Waterburg Plateau rises dramatically from the surrounding plains, circled by almost continuous sandstone cliffs. On the plateau sanctuary has been developed for several species of endangered wildlife, particularly black rhinos. This is a good stop-off or overnight on the drive back from Etosha to Windhoek.
