Footloose Travel - FAQ

All of our trips are sold without flights. This is to give you complete freedom over dates of travel, airline and route. Footloose has an experienced flights department and can obtain flights at competitive prices, but if you prefer to make your own flight arrangements we are happy to work around this too.

We have found that many suppliers advertising cheap flights only have availability at higher fares, so it is important to thoroughly check price and availability before committing yourself. Many flight suppliers also ask for full payment immediately, which can make it difficult to arrange and confirm other parts of your trip.

Footloose can help you with flight bookings

Airfare quotes for a specific flight can usually be held on option for a few days so that there is time to check your own arrangements and to ensure the rest of the trip is in order. At the end of this option period the flight can be confirmed by paying a deposit or the full amount if the departure date is less than eight weeks away.

Tickets from Footloose are supplied by consolidators who have access to discounted fares on all airlines. All suppliers hold an Air Tours Operator Licence (ATOL) holder for whom Footloose acts as agents, and the flight booking is subject to their booking conditions. These are available on request and are shown on the ATOL Receipt you will receive. The ATOL gives you full financial protection in the case of agent or operator failure.

Airline Failure is not covered by the ATOL and there is usually a small charge to give insurance protection against this.

Flight availability is often a problem, particularly to more remote destinations. Christmas, New Year, July and August are always busy and flights can be fully booked many months ahead.

Airfares are not fixed for any flights and they will vary according to time of year, number of stops, convenience of departure time and the agent selling the ticket. The fares for a specific flight will also vary depending on demand. This means the price may go up or down as the departure date approaches. In any one aircraft it is possible that everyone has paid a different fare for the same flight.

Taxes form an increasingly large part of the flight ticket price and constantly vary. They are levied by government, state, local and airport authorities. Passenger Service Charge (PSC) is a tax by another name. It is levied on all departures from the UK.

Stop-over charges are usually made if you break your journey at an intermediate point.

Increase of fares occasionally happens during the booking period and this increase would be added to your invoice. We are normally given notice of any increase and to avoid the extra cost we would ask you for full payment. Please note the only way a fare can be guaranteed is by full payment, not just a deposit. Once this has been made, there will be no increase.

Flight timings often change but you are always given notice of this. Airlines are not obliged to offer compensation for small delays.

Flight rescheduling is when there is a more serious change in the timing, usually more than twelve hours.

Re-confirming your return flight a few days before is essential for two reasons: if there is a change of departure time you will be notified; if you do not your seat may be re-sold.

Alterations by airlines often occur. There is little you can do about this other than cancel – not good for your holiday plans.

Alterations to your flight by you can sometimes be made but airlines usually charge extra. The earlier you ask the cheaper it will be. Once tickets have been issued it becomes expensive and often not possible. As the tickets are usually discounted they often have restrictions on any changes. If you think you might need greater flexibility please ask for a suitable ticket.

Cancellation charges vary between £50 and full fare. They always increase nearer departure date. Refunds can take several months to obtain. Deposits are not refundable.

If you miss your flight the airline has no responsibility. Most travel insurance will cover you in the event of failure of public transport on the way to the airport.

Insurance: It is a condition of booking that you are adequately insured and provide Footloose with a copy of your insurance policy. It is essential that your insurance company should be aware of the type of trip you are undertaking. Insurance companies will not refund premiums. Final documents cannot be issued until details are provided. We would be pleased to send details of Footloose insurance cover. It is advisable that insurance is taken out when the booking is made to cover any cancellation charges.

Check-in time is usually two hours before departure. If you arrive after this time and there is a problem, a solution will be much more difficult. It forms part of the conditions of carriage and therefore they have less responsibility to help you.

If you are changing planes on your journey and the connection is missed it is the responsibility of the airline to get you to your destination shown on the ticket. If you think you are going to be late, notify the cabin staff. They will sometimes radio ahead and delay the onward plane – this is cheaper for them than sending you on another airline at full fare. They can also arrange urgent transfer through the airport. For some destinations there are not many other flights and the airline is not responsible for getting you there on time, just on the next available flight.

Baggage should be securely closed and clearly labelled. If you are changing planes check that your bags are booked straight through. Check the receipt labels and do not loose them. If a bag is lost, report this at your destination and the airline is responsible for getting it to you, but this can take a few days.

Passport and visas are your responsibility and so check all the requirements carefully. Passports are checked by the airline at check-in. If visas are needed and you have not got one, the airline can refuse to fly you.

Airlines vary considerably and quality is usually reflected in the price. Convenience of departure and arrival times, cabin service, in flight entertainment, reliability, loss of baggage are all areas where corners might be cut.

Legroom (seat pitch) is also a factor and some expensive airlines, such as BA, are among the worst. A comparitive chart is given with Airline Details.

(DVT) Deep Vein Thrombosis is an increasing concern on long flights and it is important to follow any recommendations given by the airline to lessen the risk. The two most important things are to drink as much fluid (not alcohol) as possible, and to move about and exercise as much as possible.
