Magnificent mountains, spectacular scenery and colourful festivals
Protected by the mighty Himalaya and more recently by politics,
a visit to the isolated kingdom of Bhutan is a delightful and unforgettable
experience. The landscape is stunning, with steep forested hills
and misty mountains rising from fast flowing rivers. However it's
the fascinating culture that makes this country unique, boasting
several colourful annual festivals. At these festivals hundreds
gather to see the monks dressed in brightly coloured robes perform
ritual dances. For several days there are masked dances, prayer
meetings and a general carnival atmosphere prevails as many villagers
arrive to meet old friends and catch up with mountain gossip. On
the spring departure we will visit the Paro Festival, which culminates
with the unfurling of a giant Thanka, three stories high. We also
see all the main sights in and around Paro and Thimpu, as well as
the superb Dzongs (fortresses) that dot the valleys and hilltops,
before returning to Kathmandu.
Itinerary
Day 1 Depart London.
Day 2 Arrive Kathmandu.
Day 3 Spectacular mountain flight to Paro; drive to Thimpu, capital
of Bhutan.
Day 4 Full day sightseeing including Memorial Chorten and Simtokha
Dzong (fort).
Day 5 To Wangdiphodrang, visiting Punakha for superb mountain views
en route.
Day 6 Drive to Paro.
Day 7, 8 Two full days sightseeing and enjoying the Paro festival
and its unique atmosphere.
Day 9 Fly to Kathmandu.
Day 10 Morning sightseeing tour; afternoon free.
Day 11 Free morning to explore; depart Kathmandu.
Day 12 Arrive London.
