TANZANIAN VOLCANO TREK

Ref: TV

The fringes of the Great Rift Valley hold some of the best volcanic landscapes in Africa. This exciting major trek combines Africa's highest peak, Kilimanjaro, with the extinct volcano of Mount Meru as well as the craters and lush volcanic Maasai cattle trails of the Ngorongoro Highlands. Wildlife encounters add a twist to the trekking.

Volcano Trekking with Maasai
From Arusha we traverse the Great Rift Valley and enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Before setting out on our highlands trek we'll acclimatise with a game drive in its famous crater. Here we hope to see rhino, lion and elephant in this stunning setting. Over the next three days we'll trek along Maasai cattle trails through amazing volcanic scenery. There's a chance to ascend Olmoti volcano and enter Empakaai Crater to see its resident flamingos.

Ascent of Mount Meru
Next we enter Arusha National Park, home to a great variety of flora and fauna and Tanzania's highest peak, Mt Meru (4566m). Accompanied by a ranger/guide and porters, we hike first along game-filled plains then ascend to Miriakamba Hut (2515m) and see the spectacular ash cone and sheer cliffs that rise to the volcano summit. Passing Buffalo Swamp and Elephant Ridge we arrive at Saddle Hut (3570m) from where we skirt the crater rim to the summit.

Conquest of Kilimanjaro
This ascent of 'Kili' starts at the Machame Gate (1900m) on the western flank of the volcano and then climbs steeply through beautiful rainforest to our camp-site at Machame (3000m), and up across moorland to Shira camp (3840m). There are fantastic views of Kibo and it's icefields as we trek round the mountain to acclimatise at Barranco (3950m). We ascend to Barafu (4600m) before finally making the ascent to the summit (5895m) via Stella Point (5795m). We descend via the Mweka route which offers a different perspective again of the 'Roof of Africa' down to the plains.
