A remote trek beyond Ngorongoro Crater to the Crater Highlands
and Ol Doinyo Lengai
This remarkable, small group trek starts from the formidable Ngorongoro
Crater, a natural sanctuary for many species of wildlife where we
enjoy a day safari. From here we trek north into the Crater highlands,
leaving the safari groups behind as we enter a wild, desolate landscape.
There are only Masai villages, herds of cattle and the occasional
giraffe or zebra on the way to Empakaai, a vast forested crater
partly submerged in a lake and home to hundreds of flamingo. From
Empakaai we drop down into the Rift Valley and Lake Natron, a peaceful
lunar landscape. From our base near the lake we start our climb
of Ol Doinyo Lengai, known as the Mountain of God by the Maasai
people. This is a challenging non-technical moonlight ascent of
an active volcano.
Itinerary
Day 1 Depart London.
Day 2 Arrive Kilimanjaro and transfer to Arusha.
Day 3 A day safari in Ngorongoro Crater.
Day 4 Transfer to Nainokanoka, continue on foot to Empakaai Crater.
Day 5 Day walk into the Crater and over rim to Naiyobi.
Day 6 Long day walk along the rift valley to Lake Natron Camp.
Day 7 A free day at Lake Natron, optional village or waterfall walk.
Day 8 Early start for Ol Doinyo Lengai climb, reaching summit at
dawn; return to camp for brunch. Afternoon transfer to Mto Wa Mbu.
Day 9 Morning safari in Lake Manyara N.P. Return to camp for lunch
before transfering to Kilimanjaro for flight home.
Day 10 Arrive London.
