Peru holidays
As a holiday destination Peru, just south of the equator, scores on mountains and lost civilisations. In Peru the Andes are probably the most spectacular mountains on earth outside of the Himalayas and the Inca archaeology is the most spectacular outside of Egypt.

Peru's mountain areas
The Peruvian Andes form long ridges and deep valleys and the mountains are particularly shapely with remarkable wind carved ice flutes – Alpamayo has long held the accolade of being the world's most beautiful mountain. Trekking in Peru's mountains is varied and can take you along high valleys, across passes and longer treks can circle one of the massifs. One of the best known treks in Peru is the circuit of the Huayhuash – Footloose can arrange your Peru holiday to include a variety of mountain tours.

Inca archaeology in Peru
Inca buildings in PeruSeveral hundred years ago the Incas strode out from their capital, Cusco, to form one of the world's greatest empires. Their works still stand and are amazing in their scale and grandeur. Peru is the proud home of Machu Picchu, the lost city, the highlight of any Peru holiday. Machu Picchu is best approached on foot along the Inca Trail and we can offer several tours that do just this. Around Cusco and the Sacred Valley are many other outstanding archaeological sites well worth a visit.

Lake Titicaca
One of our popular tours takes the world's highest railway from Cusco and visits Lake Titicaca. There is an other-worldly atmosphere about this high lake, with huge blue skies and sparkling light. A boat will take you to the floating reed islands on the lake. See Peru holiday itineraries for details.

The lowlands of Peru
In the Peruvian lowlands there are many other places worth visiting, other ruins, cities and, of course, those fascinating Nazca Lines in the desert. See our Peru holiday itineraries for details of tours to these areas.

peru climate
The climate of Peru can be split into three distinct areas – the coast, the mountains and the rainforest.

Peru's mountain areas (Blanca, Huayhuah, Vilcanota, Sacred Valley, Inca Trail and Cusco) are dry and sunny from May to September with increasing rain until the maximum in January/February.

The coast of Peru is dry and sunny from October to May. The rest of the year there is a damp mist. Temperatures are not high because of the cooling Humboldt Current sweeping up from the Antarctic.

The valleys and rainforest of Peru are pleasantly warm but there is often frost at the high camps. The rainforest is hot and wet most of the time.

peru visas, health and security
There is no requirement for visas for visitors to Peru from the UK and most European countries. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after your return.

There are no requirements for inoculations. All normal inoculations should be current.

Peru is generally safe to visit but there is some petty theft in cities and on public transport.
