tibet footloose
To the north of the Himalayas lies Tibet, a land still shrouded in mystery. Access to Tibet has never been easy because of the country's geography and politics, but with flights from Kathmandu and a reasonable road, the geography is not such a great problem these days. The bureaucracy is still difficult and facilities are often rudimentary. Despite this, if approached the right way, a visit to Tibet is well worth the hardship and hassle.

The main interest in Tibet is in getting some insight into the traditions. Although the Chinese have damaged many of the buildings and artefacts, much still remains and there is now a positive move to restore many of the monasteries.

A short tour from Kathmandu will give you time to visit many of the, monasteries in and around Lhasa. You will have official guides with you and any travel outside of Lhasa will always be accompanied – not always as onerous as it might seem, as this will give opportunities to learn about the way of life at first hand.

Longer visits are possible, including the two most famous destinations – Everest North base camp and Mount Kailash. The classic and sacred trek around Mount Kailash can also be arranged, for small groups.

itineraries for tibet
Visits to Tibet all start from Kathmandu, so it is easy to combine a visit here with a trek in Nepal. These itineraries will give an idea of what is possible and are arranged around flight schedules. Time in Nepal can include trekking or rafting and perhaps a visit to Chitwan Park.

Visas can be obtained by our agents in Kathmandu, but note this can take a few days before the trip starts. Because of the extreme difficulty of operating in Tibet, these trips need a minimum of 4, although we can often make up groups locally. Prices are for guidance only.
